1.
How much pigment? Lip colors can range from being super sheer and translucent
to opaque and everything in between. Opaque lips are best to save for special
nights - and for when you're out of high school. Sheer lips (shown left:
Clinique) let you try a wider range of colors (violet, berry, rose, hot pink,
red, nude, baby pink, brown...) and show less mistakes.
2. What formula and finish? Shimmer, sparkle, gloss, satin,
matte, frost, creme, metallic, iridescent... there are plenty of options
here. Experiment and find what looks best on you. Matte might look too grown-up
and stuffy, but can look very pretty with the right color for the right occasion.
Too much sparkle, glitter, or shimmer will look overdone, but a little bit
is fun.
If you don't know where to start, a sheer,
creamy color with a tiny bit of shine is universally
flattering.
