HOW TO GET A SAFE FAKE
TAN
With it being back to school soon, everybody will
know where you spent your summer vacation. Make them all think you went to
the Bahamas without worrying about scary UVA and UVB rays -- get a fake
tan!
1.
FORMULA:
Depending on your past experience with self-tanning, you might want to
choose an easier or more advanced formula. Beginners should try spray-on
formulas (like Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Spray). While getting the correct
formula/shade combination should be your #1 priority, choose something with
a fresh scent if you have the option. (check out Bath and Body Works - they
carry fruity scented tanners)! Look for products with a plant extract called
"tyrozine," which safely accelerates the process.
2.
SHADES:
What works for your best friend probably won't work for you unless you have
the exact same coloring. Tanners usually come in Light/Medium, Medium/Deep,
and Very Deep. When you are tan (for your health's sake, we hope you are
not tan right now!), how much does your skin color change? Generally,
Light/Medium is your best bet because it is best to get a lighter glow than
expected instead of a dark orange mask!
3.
EXFOLIATION:
For 5-7 days prior to using your self tanner, you will want to exfoliate
well. This takes the dead skin cells off the top layer of skin and softens
rough spots. Use a washcloth or loofah to scrub skin before and after washing
with soap. Repeat this every day. If you have a body scrub, use this every
other day in addition to the washcloth or loofah.
4.
MOISTURIZE:
Apply a good layer of thick, creamy moisturizer to your freshly shaved,
exfoliated, and cleansed skin. The creamy moisture on your body helps the
tanner to glide on evenly. Once you have applied plenty of moisture to your
skin, read and closely follow the directions on the package. Start with thin
layers and gradually reach your golden tan.
NOTE: THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY
SUGGESTS THAT A SUNSCREEN WITH AN SPF OF AT LEAST 15 SHOULD BE USED YEAR-ROUND.
